In 1908, a space rock exploded several miles above Siberia and flattened trees across roughly 830 square miles. That event, known as Tunguska, was probably caused by an object in the same broad size neighborhood as YR4.
Similar size does not mean identical composition, entry angle, orbit, or outcome. Still, Tunguska offers a rare historical reference point for why objects around 60 meters receive serious study—and why YR4’s close 2032 passage is scientifically valuable.
An asteroid need not be dinosaur-sized to produce a powerful local event, and it may burst in the atmosphere rather than carve out a crater. YR4 lets researchers examine that size class from an entirely different vantage point: years of warning, Webb measurements, and a close passage through our celestial backyard.
