When a telescope first spots an asteroid, astronomers do not instantly know its full route. They have a handful of dots against a star field—more like three frames from a road-trip video than a complete map.
Observatories around the world measure the dot’s position again and again. Those observations go to the Minor Planet Center, and orbit specialists use them to calculate where the object has been and where it is going. With YR4, each additional data point tightened the prediction for December 2032.
The result is a forecast that reaches across years and hundreds of millions of miles of travel: roughly 173,000 miles from Earth’s center and 13,200 miles above the Moon. The asteroid follows gravity; the achievement is that humans learned to read its itinerary with such extraordinary precision.
