The easiest picture is a narrowing flashlight beam projected all the way to 2032. Earlier this week, Earth sat inside a denser part of that beam. New telescope positions have shifted the beam so our planet is close to its edge. More observations could push Earth outside the remaining possibilities entirely.
This rapid rise and fall is not science changing its mind at random. It is science showing its work in public, with each estimate stamped to the information available at that moment. YR4 is still worth following: its December 2032 passage through our neighborhood remains a remarkable long-range tracking challenge. But tonight’s update is an encouraging example of why patient observation matters more than any single percentage.
