The latest estimate gives 2024 YR4 a 1.8% chance of meeting Earth in 2032, up from the figures reported last week. That does not mean the asteroid suddenly turned toward us. The rock is following the same orbit it was yesterday; our drawing of that orbit is becoming more detailed.
Imagine a long ribbon of possible positions stretched across space. Early on, Earth sits somewhere inside that ribbon. As observations narrow it, the fraction overlapping our planet can briefly grow—even while the ribbon itself gets smaller. With enough good measurements, Earth will usually slide outside it altogether.
